Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
