In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
