Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such medications must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
