Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
